Zero Emission Bus Services

Electric bus

Blackpool has been selected as one of the recipients of the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) scheme funding. This initiative is a significant step towards reducing our dependence on fossil fuels in public transportation and transitioning to all-electric bus services in the area.

It is worth noting that Blackpool has a rich history of pioneering electric transport. Electric trams have been in operation since 1885, and from 1962 unit 1992 Blackpool was the only town or city in the UK with an electric tram service. Therefore, it is fitting that Blackpool can once again lead the way in the deployment of electric transport.

For the Layton area, the benefits of transitioning to zero-emission buses are clear. Diesel particulates in the air can cause significant harm to public health, and Layton Square is a busy intersection for public transportation. With around 22 Blackpool Transport buses passing through each hour during the day, cleaner air would contribute to a healthier Layton.

As we move forward, I believe that the council should explore opportunities to replace other diesel-powered vehicles with electric ones when they are due for renewal. Many other councils have already started replacing their refuse wagons with electric-powered versions, and I believe that these would be an ideal candidate to start with due to the extended dwell times outside people’s homes with the engine running.
